Rebecca Chamberlain grew up on the beaches and in the forests of Whidbey Island and the Northwest, where her poetry, writing, and storytelling were rooted in a love of nature and myth. Her work is influenced by an eclectic mix that includes poetry & literature, natural history, mythology, and native language and storytelling traditions.
A Northwest writer, storyteller, and educator, she holds an M.A. in English Literature from the University of Washington with an emphasis in Medieval Literature, oral narrative, and Puget Sound Salish storytelling traditions. She has worked for fifteen years as a Washington State Artist In Residence and has toured internationally as a storyteller, and has trained teachers and educators in graduate programs in arts education, storytelling, and poetry. She has worked developing a variety of educational public programs for science and natural history organizations. She is the author of books, essays, and curriculum materials that integrate natural history, native cultural traditions, and the arts: including, "The Power of Story: Words on the Wing," The Earth is Our First Teacher: Discovering Language and Place," The Return Of The Rainwater Baskets, The Work Of The Winds, Sharing The Circle: Native Music Of Washington State, and "Native Songs and Food Gathering Traditions," from Spirit of the First People. She teaches interdisciplinary courses at the Evergreen State College in literature, storytelling, and writing that explore illuminated manuscripts, comparative mythology, cultural studies, and natural history. She is currently teaching "The Inspiration of William Blake," "Transcendental Visions: Re-imagining the American Dream," and "The Power of Story." She also teaches courses in the humanities and sciences for Lesley College, Saint Martins University, and Antioch University's Muckleshoot Tribal Program.
